1987 240 with only 150000, with top end noise? Say it ain't so.

My son's 240 started making some bearing noise the other day, so I thought that it was the alternator since it's the most likely thing on the passenger side of the engine, in the vicinity of the noise. But after running the engine with the belts off the alternator, I could still hear the noise. It sounds to me like it is coming from the rear of the head. It is definately bearing noise. Maybe the belt tensioner? I have driven 240's for 25 years and never heard of anyone replacing a head, and at one time my whole family drove them.
