First, thanks to all of you for your replies.
I no longer go to the dealer for work, I have found a terrific independent shop in town that specializes in Volvos. About two years ago I had the dealer do a used car inspection on my 1980 to see whether it was worth putting money into it for me to use as my daily driver - it had spent three years, poor thing, as my daughters' car. Over the next year I had several bad experiences with the dealer and their service. One of the things was how much time they charged for the timing belt replacement, my new technician whistled when he was checking their invoice on what work they had done, he said the parts charges were fair, but they socked it to me on labor - for the timing belt it was 3.60 hours. Anyway I received a card from the dealer this weekend asking whether I had moved, or sold the car, as they had not heard from me, and giving me a coupon for a free 40 point check on my car (right, I can just guess how many hundreds of dollars of work they would say that my car "needed!") and a car wash. They also said that if I had been unsatisfied with their work to let them know. I would like to write them back saying that although they had always been very good about squeezing my car in when I had an emergency, they had done, or not done, several things that had destroyed my trust in them, and list them, taking the tack that I hope that it will be helpful for them in maintaining good customer relations.
A general thanks here to all who contribute their advice and experiences to the Brickboard, I have been educating myself about my cars and their workings and eccentricities and have learned so much from this board.
