That does sound like maybe the AMM is bad, and the air box thermostat should certainly come out so only fresh, not hot, air reaches the AMM. The ECU may be the original and frail 561, known to fail often, though I am not sure it is causing the AMM to fail, it could be producing similar and confusing symptoms. The only reasonable cure is an AMM and ECU out of a junkyard car. Units that have been tested in a running car. You can easily change them yourself. Very easily.
