I assume it's the same thing as on my 95 960, which means it's useless.
I wouldn't pay anything to replace it. Forget about it and look for an aftermarket device that clips or hangs on to something in another location.
Most auto supply stores have a wide range of holders.
My son got a good one for his BMW that clips on the center console.
