Suging Engine While Coasting 900 1993

Hello folks,

I am in desperate need of some info on my 1993 940T wagon. My wife called me today to indicate that the car is surging into 2 -3000 rpm while just coasting at 30 mph with her foot off the gas. The engine seems to do this on and off today. I had her start the car in the garage and it seems to be running fine. Does anyone know what this is for I feel this is very dangerous.

Much appreciated
