Turbo on an '88 740T 700

My car has 130K on it. While driving, a 'whirring' noise began emanating from what I believe is the turbo unit. It happens under boost (acceleration) and will remain until I let off of the gas and bring the car to about 40 mph. I can hear it 'whirring' in step with the turbo spooling up. It will not do it sitting in the driveway, revving the engine.

Could this spell the beginning of the end for this unit?

I ask, because the faq had one entry that described a noise that was affected by a malfunctioning waste-gate valve.

Thanks,
-Linc
