245 drinking ~2litres of water every 5km's....blown head gasket? 200 1977

Hey all,

Two days ago, I fired up my beast, and headed on a 4 hour drive to my "local" capital city, Melbourne. Made it up there no worries, but coming back, I was 20minutes from home, and I noticed the temperature guage starting to push above "N", and almost to the RED area. I quickly pulled over, and popped the hood to find no coolant in the expansion tank at all. I checked underneath as I poured more in with the engine running, but no leak appeared. I then thought the worst, and popped the oil filler cap, to find sickening grey milk everywhere. Water was obviously getting into the oil. Upon starting it back up, the starter had immense trouble turning the engine over initially, which I suspect may have been to the degradation of oil? I had to drive it home 5km's at a time, filling it with water at each stop. Everytime I started up after this, a large cloud of white smoke would pour out of the exhaust, but dissapear after a minute. I also noticed it had a sort of turbo effect, a great amount of boost when all four cylinders fired up, as it was started on a maximum of 3 cylinders. How would I determine whether the head is warped? Visual check? Past posts in the archives seem to point to a blown head gasket or cracked/warped head. It this likely to be a blown head gasket?

About 3,000km's ago, I changed the head (unshaved off a 1977 245 with reco'd engine) and installed a new Elring gasket, and never had any obvious problems with the new installation.
The car has 260,000km's on it, and has been cared for pretty much, minus the few times I've needed to arc up and blow away an uppity GM owner. :)

All responses appreciated.
