Horrible gas mileage 200 1979

I just purchased a 1979 245 wagon about a week ago and it quickly became apparent to me that it was getting terrible gas mileage. My odometer only works about half the time, adding to my problems, but I've estimated that it's only getting about 10 miles per gallon, which is completely unacceptable. It seems to be sucking up so much gas that I wondered if it had a leak, but I haven't discovered anything. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this horrible mileage? All the filters appear to be new and the engine seems to run well. It does idle pretty low, but it's steady and consistant. Thanks for the help.
