lukewarm AC 200 1982

Hello gang
I ran into a sweetheart of a deal on an 82 diesel wagon with 45k original miles. Its a sister to one I finally got rid of 3-4 years ago just before the body rusted off. But on to the AC question

My previous diesel was marginal on cooling (full blast at highway speed was barely tolorable) and that was with freon. I just converted this one to freeze 12 and see about the same performance. Could this be related to diesel (maybe lower rpms?). Any thoughts on best way to improve performance. I see discussion on variety of compressors. To my knowledge this has original compressor and I am wondering if I just need a more effecient unit. Temp of outlet pipe on the compressor doesn't seem anywhere near as hot as the pipe on my parents GM cars.

Thanks
