Sudden GROWLING sound. What the heck is it?? 200 1984

No forwarning, just this morning I get a call at work from the wife..."The car is making a loud growling or moaning sound." Told her to leave it and take the wagon.
Sure enough, I crank it up and things are fine for about two seconds and then a growling sound foward and perhaps low which is pretty persistant at idle but when I start to rev the motor after RPMs increase between 300-500 the sound immediately stops. Back down near idle and it's growling again.
Checked the power steering fluid. It was low but topping it off didn't change anything. Belts are good too.

What am I looking at here? I need to get this car back up fast. Just when I'm ready to tear the wagon apart to replace warped rotors and the O2 sensor!
