I am hoping to find someone who currently has a B230FT unbolted from the transmission of a 1989 Bertone 780.
An old friend, now 300 miles away, had the engine rebuilt on his '89 780 last year - about 17,000 miles ago. The turbo just failed on it and my bud wants an excuse to do a V-8 conversion instead of replacing the turbo. I have the opportunity to buy this engine at a "good buddy" price, to replace the noisy, tired mill in my wife's 1990 760. I looked at it this weekend and it sounds great. Smooth as silk and excellent compression test. He's still driving it every day but wants to know whether to spring for a turbo or find a clean 5.0 and AOD to drop in.
About 4 hours into the drive home, I realized that his 780 has LH 2.2 with the ignition pick-up in the distributor but the 760 has LH 2.4 with the sensor mounted at the top of the bell housing. I called my friend today and had him look at the back of the block. The transmission housing does not have the cutout for an ignition pickup but there is a small bump in the casting of the engine block, centered between the two top bolts, creating a small space between the block and the flat surface of the bell housing.
The block number (from the flat number pad near the alternator) is 1289149. Volvo confirmed that this is the original block used in 1989 780. The 740T/760 block for the same year (1989) comes up as different part numbers (1289159/160/161).
After all that, here's my question; can someone tell me for certain if this engine has the two small holes drilled and tapped for the bracket that holds the crankshaft pickup sensor? I need them for the 1990 760.
My decision to buy the engine and transport it 300 miles is based on the answer.
