Bosch alternator life expectancy 200 1985

My '85 245 just clicked over 215,000. I replaced the brush pack/voltage regulator unit at about 150k, but otherwise the alt. is "original." I've been told that these things will outlast Western civilization, and that the only wear items are the brushes. Is this bunk? I imagine that the bearings are going to let go eventually. Should I be carrying a spare in the trunk? Charging system seems to work fine now, but you know how it is...one day it works okay, and the next day it's dead.
