AMM / MAF 4v Burn-off Cleaning Cycle

I'm trying to use a Volvo/Bosch MAF in another application, and I'm trying to understand how the self-cleaning operation works, as I'm trying to re-produce the function in a manual fashion. I know that the PCM activates a 4v circuit for 1 second after shut-down. So here's my question... Must the 12v running voltage supply be shut off when this 4v burn-off cycle is activated? It would make life easier if I could have the meter powered with it's usual 12v while I activate the cleaning cycle, but if the 4v is getting switched into the same circuit normally "occupied" by 12v when running, that won't work.
