If you mark the receiving jug (or bucket) with a mark for every quart, you can tell if you're putting in the same amount that's coming out. If you think you aren't keeping up, do like Randy said and just shut off the engine until you "catch up". Personally, I think if you have a decent size funnel on the filler tube, and the engine is just idling, you won't have a problem.
