I'm just SURE that something happened between 1969 and now.
I just KNOW it!!!
That was when I was driving a 544 with Rambler pistons ($4.70 each) with
0.070" milled off parts of the crown to make them miss the head.
Did fine for about 40,000 miles until one day on loop 410 in San Antonio,
with both kids in the car (Esther wasn't born yet) at about 70 mph, the
car filled with smoke. I opened the windows but it was STILL full.
A teardown revealed cracks in the tops of all 4 and a 1/4" hole melted
through one. Figured it would take about $200 worth of parts to fix it
right and the next day someone offered a B16 444 in the San Antonio Light,
freshly overhauled, for $200. The easy way out.
Anyhow I don't want to lose that 32 years. I am definitely not sturdy
enough to do it all over at this late date!
At least I am staying logged in now. I guess Gen Bonaparte was correct
in identifying it as a burned cookie because as soon as I got rid of it
and let the board make me a new one, things got better.
ps: Not a goat but a Walrus.
