'89 760t stalls and starves for fuel only when warm 700 1989

Hi,

This is a very consistent, repeatable problem. Cold starting is fine, idle is good. If the dash temerature gauge stays left of center, all is well. If the gauge goes vertical or past, the car will stall at stops, hesitate or stall off the line and be difficult to start again without a lot of throttle pumping, or waiting for the car to cool somewhat. Warmed with no load, I can rev the engine fairly well, but putting it in gear will cause a stall. If I can get it to move without stalling, acceleration is poor (hesitation and fuel starvation symptoms) until the car gains some momentum; it will then run ok at speed. Leaving the heat on full blast during cool weather will keep the temp low enough to avoid the symptoms altogether, but summer is coming and I can't rely on that workaround much longer! This is my first Volvo, and I am fairly ignorant of the breed in general. A local (non-Volvo specialist) mechanic says that the TPS is not working properly and recommends replacement at $78 for the part, $30 for installation. He admits he's not 100% sure that will fix it. I understand there are temp sensors in the engine and airbox...could it be either/both of these? Any help is appreciated!
