error 2-3-2 on 90 16 valve 700 1990

Hello and thanks in advance.
I have a '90 740gle auto, 135k miles. Ocassionally it will start idleing very poorly, the engine will lose most of it's power and it will usually die in gear with the a/c on. What is strange about it is that it will start doing it, run like that for a while and then it will run fine all of the sudden. It always logs an error 2-3-2 and it used to log a 1-2-3 till I swapped the ECU, but it still logs the 2-3-2 every time it does it. It also has a strange way of doing it when I have passengers in the car. I brag about my car a lot so it's embarrising. I've tested the O2 sensor and it was well within the resistance values specified in the chilton's manual. I've never had an oppurtunity to test it while it's running poorly though. The description in the chilton's manual is slightly... vague "self adjusting oxygen sensor not operating, check air intake system or fuel system".

please give me somewhere to start looking.

thanks in advance
nate
