Timing belt failure: function of age or mileage? 200 1985

Friends,

Volvo recommends a t-belt change interval of 4 years or 45K for the 200 series. My problem is that if I followed their recommendation, I would be changing the belt about once a year. It's not a bad job, I've done a few times, but is very time consuming for this mediocre shadetree mechanic.

So, what I'm wondering is if the the teeth on the belt actually wear, or if the belt usually fails as a function of old age (i.e. brittle rubber)? Could I get away with running it for 4 years? Or at least a couple?
