Rattling/Humming from manual 4spd, but not when in overdrive...Suggestions? 200

Hello all, I have a 1986 240DL with the 4spd manual w/overdrive. The transmission shifts well and I have no problems with that or with the clutch (that I am aware of). However, there is this annoying humming/rattling sound that appears to be coming from the general area of the shifter boot. The noise only happens when accelerating, when you take your foot off the gas it stops. It also stops when you really get cruising and put the car into overdrive. Then it is nice and quiet. Any suggestions? Is this something I need to worry about, or should I just turn the radio up louder? Thanks!
