sudden no start 1990 740 16v 700 1990

I have a sudden no-start on 1990 740 16v auto tran. It was starting, then suddenly, no start.

Turn key, lights cut out, radio off, but no starter running.
I've jiggled the key, and the shift knob, (both are loose), nothing.

It does not seem to be the battery, is there a check list to go through to trouble shoot this?
