troubleshooting 5th gear problem 200 1986

My 86 240 with 218k miles has developed a problem and I am looking for suggestions on what I should try next to fix it. 5th gear will not disengage after I have been on the highway for a while. When it has run for only a few minutes or so it works OK. When it doesn't disengage, I can feel it slipping in 4th gear and lower gears. Eventually it seems to disengage by itself. My 5th gear light always goes off even though 5th gear is still engaged. I removed the relay and resoldered(as per Don's previous posts) and also tried a spare I had with no change in the problem. I have considered changing the solenoid but do not want to do that if it might be another problem. Any suggestions on what I should try next would be appreciated.
