timing belt tensioner 200 1983

OK- 1983 242 with B21A, first noticed a noise yesterday morning that sounded like grinding/scraping. Heard it again tonight (both times after a longish (50 minutes) run on the Interstate at about 75). In the waning minutes of daylight, I got a better hear and look at it and for it. It sounds suspiciously like a bad bearing sound, and from a spot that makes me think "timing belt tensioner". So, a multi-part question:

A) Is there any other culprit I should investigate for this kind of sound right in the front of the engine (do bad water pumps make noise)?

B) If it is the tensioner, is it worth it and possible to pull the tensioner without removing the timing belt and try to lube the tensioner?

C) If it is the tensioner, how long before it seizes and snaps the timing belt?

Thanks in advance to my brothers and sisters in auto cultdom...
