Sunroof woes! 700 1990

My electric sunroof is bust! To open or close it, i have to aid the motor by pushing it in the direction i want it to go from inside. The process is very slow.
When it does close, it's sunk down about 1/4" on the passenger side. And when I put it into the vent position, it only lifts up on the driver's side. Maybe a cable is broken?
I read the faq, and tried to release the springs that hold the cover, but I can only get at the one on the driver's side because it refuses to lift up on the passenger side. I am a die-hard do-it-yourselfer, and hate the thought of paying someone to fix this.
Help!! How do I access it's inner workings? I've wrestled with it several times but given up in fear of breaking something.

thanks,

-Steve
