Overdrive jumps in and out rapidly on manual tranny

I have a 1983 240 with manual transmission with overdrive (4+1). The transmission was entirely rebuilt a week ago and seemed fine during local driving. Last night I took the first long trip (50 miles) and used overdrive for the first time. After about 30 miles in overdrive it started jumping in and out of overdrive continuously. Sometimes it would stay in overdrive for several seconds, sometimes it immediately jumped out of overdrive. When I pressed the overdrive button on the shifter to turn overdrive off, it remained in 4th gear for the remainder of the trip.

Any ideas??

Thanks, Keith
