Identify tiny flexible cable from speedo, please 200 1983

83 245DL: There was a minor squeaking behind the instrument cluster while rolling slowly. I assumed a dry speedo cable so I removed the instrument pod to give the cable a shot of white grease. I was surprised to find an additional smaller flexible cable running from the back of the speedometer to a small box to the left of the cluster behind the dash. What is the function of this object?
