Engine revs up and down slowly and sometimes cuts out on initial startup 700

my 85 760 turbo has developed a symptom of idling up and down slowly a couple times before it goes to normal idle. on a few occasions the idle drops so low that the car shuts off. usually after driving for a while the rpms sit above the one. i am not familiar with turbos yet and i am afraid to tinker too much before asking your opinions.
