what is normal behaviour on a ZF tranny? 700

1986 740 NA with ZF auto-tranny.
last tranny oil change was 1 year ago.
talking about cruise speed below the lookup at 50 mph

before few weeks the behaviour was like that:
driving in "D" the car shifts through the gears
when i release the acelerator - the rpms drop about 500 rpms,
but don't go to idle.

now recently when i release the accelerator, the
rpms drops to idle, but only sometimes.
but when i accelerate again its fine - the rpms
go up - tranny stays in gear - car moves on

i don't know what is a regular behaviour?
should i worry about it?
or is it unrelated to the tranny itself - but
rather needs adjustment of the cable?

thanks friends
