Early cold stall 700 1988

Just wanted to confirm that i'm fixing the right thing. My car has decided to start a new problem as of last week. When ever i start it up after a long sit (i.e 3 hours or more), the car cranks about 3 to four times and then suddenly sounds like you over cranked. The pitch gets higher. So thinking that the engine has started, i let go of the key...but the engine dies like it never got gas. When i try to start it after that, it starts right up like nothing was wrong. Never happens when the engine is warm or has been driven a short while ago.
When it started to happen, i presumed that something was dirty so i cleaned the fuel system and the air intake throttle control. After that did nothing but help my idle, i checked the FAQ and noticed that it could be the fuel pump check valve. So, before i started the car today i click the starter a bit just to get the fuel pump working. Seems to fixed the problem to some extent.
Anyway, sometime soon...like when i get paid...i'm going to order the check valve and replace it.

Does this sound right?
