A/C cuts in and out all by itself 900 1993

1993 volvo 940 O/D tranny, no turbo
Sometimes my A/C doesn't work. It doesn't matter what I do nothing happens. The fan doesn't blow and the compressor doesn't come on. Then all of a sudden while driving it comes on. It will stay on until I shut the car off. Then if I start the engine again, the A/C is dead until I drive around. I kinda believe its a relay problem but don't know which relay. I know where the relays are located but there doesn't seem to be any for the A/C. Can someone help ?
