Strange loss of RPMs on freeway 200 1983

While driving the 1983 244GL, on the freeway at 65 MPH and 2500 RPM, I experience a momentary loss of RPM down to approximately 1000 RPM and then it jumps back to 2500 RPM with a slight loss in speed, which quickly returns to 65. Gas pedal kept steady during this event. This has happened several times in the last couple of days but only at freeway speeds. Everything seems to run fine at lower speeds around town.
Anyone ever heard of this one? I’m stumped. (B23 engine with AW7x trans)
