Overdrive 'warm up' period? 200 1985

Car is an '85 DL wagon. M46 trans.

My owner's manual says something to the effect that the car must be driven for 5 miles/5 minutes at highway speed before engaging the overdrive. I can't recall what page this is on, but it is in the section regarding the manual trans./overdrive. I have noticed in the morning that, by golly, she won't go into overdrive until I have driven (you guessed it) approximately 5 miles. However, once the car has reached operating temp, even if I turn it off and start up again within several hours, it goes in right away.

So, is this normal as the owner's manual leads me to believe, or is something up with my o/d? Have been told various things by various mechanics and other owners, ranging from "yup, normal" to "replace your 4th gear switch" and so on.

Anyone else's M46 do this?
