Mystery fuse/wire near fuse box, 82 240GL Diesel Wagon 200

Hey guys,

I was looking down in the driver's side footwell of my 1982 240GL Diesel Wagon, and found a disconnected wire coming from the area where the hood release pull knob comes from in the firewall area. 2 wires came out, one had a blue connector (connected) followed by an inline fuse tube on the end, and a female connector after the fuse (loose, blue like the connected ones), while the other wire had a matching male blue connector that was also loose. They look like they are supposed to go together (matching sexes, same color), but I dont know what they are for and therein don't want to connect them and have something explode.

Can anyone ID these connectors, their purpose, and if I should connect them?

Thanks in advance,
Rotor
