Transmission Fluid and Leak Ques 200 1993

What is the proper method for checking Tranny Fluid level? How warm should the car be, etc.? Do you push the stick all the way in until its sealed then out and check?

Maybe a dumb question, but when I check mine the fluid looks to be over the entire plastic portion and onto the metal stick. If true, that would be way to high, huh?

I ask because yesterday I took her into the Berkshires. 70f outside, no A/C. After a long climb (30-45mph) to the top of the hill 3-4k feet up or so, I pulled into a parking lot and smoke was pouring off the exhaust pipe right next to the tranny, as if something was leaking onto the pipe and burning off. I though it was oil.

But this morning, after my normal slight uphill drive home from church upon pulling into the driveway...a little more smoke. This time I got a paper towel and wiped the pipe and some wet spots on the bolts around the tranny. It was red. It smells like burnt electric or something similar, if that helps.

I had been noticing a slight smell like this since I got the car a month ago. Oil level hasn't changed. Tranny still looks full...if not too full.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Pete
