Running warm-er / fan probs. 200 1984

My 240 has recently started to run warmer in traffic than it previously had, not everheating but the temp. gauge has been sitting far higher on the scale as it has ever sat before.
I replaced the thermostat which was buggered, however the problem is still there.
Now my fan behind the radiator at cold feels to have plenty of friction, however when the engine is hot the fan seems to loose friction.. i can stop the fan with my fingers when the engine is hot and idling. I thought that the fan friction should increase with engine temp. is that correct? does it sound like i need a new fan? any thoughts on what else i could try?
thanks
Glen
