more steering rack stuff...a few q's 200

Found a leak at the seal where the steering shaft enters the top of the rack..
is this a repairable item or is it better to just r&r the rack...? oh, yeah...
apparently my drug crazed college kid (just kidding) had run it very low but
probably not empty...would this cause other damage to the rack....it seems that
amy, the terror of rye, has done the same, and her steering wheel moves, even when driving straight....anyone know what kind of bad juju happens when a rack
is run dry.....TIA for any help......j.
