760 Steering Rack... 700 1988

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1988 760 Turbo with what I suspect to be a bad steering rack. I found nothing like this symptom in the 700/900 FAQ, so I must ask. The rack itself has no play at all in the gearing, as you can just touch the wheel ever so sloghtly on an alignment rack and the readings change (and you can see the wheel move with no play at all). However, the inner tie-rods have a ridiculous amount of play inside of the rack housing. More descriptively, if I pull back the rack boot and shake the tie rod, it rattles in the rack housing (almost as if the housing is worn, not the tie-rod. iPd had an article once about this, and they claimed that this is normal and should not cause alarm. However, I feel that this rack should NOT have this much play. The car also has a hell of a shudder when the brakes are applied at high speeds. The rotors are slightly warped, but this shudder is more than warped rotors. Nearly every other component in the front suspension is recent. The car has new front bushings (all), recent struts, and recent ball joints. What could this be? Could this be a bad steering rack? The car also wears the very outside edge of the left front tire (always has since I have owned it). Could this be related? ANY help on this issue is greatly appreciated, as I must solve this problem. Sorry for the lengthy message.

Thanks a lot,

Joe Schaefer

P.S. - What type of rack is this in my car? (TRW, cam gear, ZF?)
