Hey,
Just reading up on posts & caught your comment on the IC / lights issue. I had some trouble with my IC here & there in my 87 & found it to be a bad circuit wich was easily fixed with some solder & wire.
A couple days later, I decided to check out the back of my IC in my 88 as the tach was right @ 1300 rpms off true "most" of the time & true the rest. Sure enough, the same circuit was slightly dark in one spot. I decided to try soldering in a jumper just for knowledge's sake & sure enough, my tach's now true all the time.
If you want to check it out, remove your IC (easy as can be) & check the pc board just behind the speedo. The circuit will be in the bottom right hand with the back of the IC facing you & the IC right side up. On both of mine, there was a "3" marking just beside the problem area.
If that does turn out to be the prob, just remove the 2 machine screws right beside it (for room to work & not mess up the flex board) & remember which has the lead attached to it. Scratch off the protective coating on the PC board @ the large ends of the circuit with a knife. Clean the spots with common rubbing alcohol. When soldering to a PC board that does not have a pin joint (as in this case) roll your soldering iron over the area to be soldered for some time, making sure to contact the whole area to be heated before you touch the solder to the wire & board.
Hope this turns out to be something easy for folks. I can take a snap of one repaired if anyone would like.
Take care,
Frank
