dave, i have an 89 16v (202K) and have had issues on and off since 60k. it always set code 232 indicating a rich or lean condition at idle. The ECU went sour last year and since replacing it, the 232 code has never been set. if I recall, there was a factory bulletin back in 91 or so that indicated that the IGN control unit needed to swapped in tandem with an upgraded ECU. This was done at the time. these 16v programs run these engines very lean at idle. they cover calif reqs as well as the other 49 states. couple that with 10% ethanol or MTBE oxynigates in the fuel these days, and these things won't idle smooth.

lately, mine has been idling rough again. i'll probably replace some of the older components as you suggested.
