porting a b230ft head 700 1988

Hey, Though I've ported several heads, I've yet to do a Volvo head.
As to the tool to use, there's an air tool I suggest that is often called a "pneumatic shaft grinder" or "port grinder / polisher". It looks much like your dremel, but has a much longer shaft for working up into the ports & much much more needed torque. I haven't used one, but they make an electric version as well.
As to the gringind tool it's self, there are several different mediums U'll need.
1) patch honer (looks like a drum sander only it's several pieces of sandpaper formed into a circle)
2) diamond grinders (a few different shapes & make sure to get the good ones, the cheaies won't save you any $ as they don't last long enough to do a port matching)
3) burmishing compound & wheel small enough to use it in the ports.

Those 3 are just the basic ones. Most often there are several more tools I use, but these 3 will get the job done.

It is imparitive that all intake ports match each other in flow as well as entrance shape. The same is true for the Exhaust side.

The biggest suggestion I can make is that you go find some junk heads of simular compisition as yours & practice quite a bit before hitting yours.

You might want to start with just a port matching on your head after your practice runs. You can do that, run it & go further later.

You should be able to find junk heads @ your nearest junk yard. They hardly ever want more than scrap price for them if you tell them why you want them & often they'll give them to you.

On that note, I personally belive that a good port matching on the intake & exhause side along with a good polishing would do you more good on that head than a port job.

You can find a good deal on port matching, polishing & porting on the web. I searched using "port & polish heads" in google.com & came up with this site just now. I haven't pre-read it, so I'm not calling it a good one, use several different search terms & the sites you notice coming up with "we port your heads" & other stuff you don't want, simply exclude those "bad" words from your search (use advanced search). http://www.nateswaterart.com/vw/port_polish/

PS. You should know that it's usually cheaper to have your head done (as far as full porting) after you go through all the goodies you'll need, but it's worth it in short order as you get it the way YOU want it & you'll not let those little tools catch dust after your first head.
