how do I tell which is broken, the OD switch or the OD relay? 700

The OD on my AW70-equipped '89 745GL is spotty, sometimes you can get in and out, sometimes not. How do I tell whether the problem is the relay or the switch on the shifter? I'd rather not buy both if all I need is one. Thanks--
