Heavy intermittent ticking with power surging 700

Any one out there ever had this problem? I have a 1989 740GL B230F with 190000 km's on it.
The car will be going along fine when the ticking starts,I can feel the power surging and the rev counter moves up and down as well.
The brakes don't have to be applied for this to happen,so I don't think it's the ABS.I was wondering if it's the 87 octane gas i'm using? anybody have any thoughts on this one?
thanks in advance
charlie
