Steering Problem - Feels Like No Variable Assist 200

All,

Car is running great so of course something has to go wrong - now a problem with steering. I don't know if it is in the column, if it is a belt or pulley bearing, or something down in the rack, or something else.

Wife said she heard a snap and then the steering seemed much looser. At the same time, she said the car whined when the accelerator was stepped on. I just checked it out and noticed that the whining seems to be coming from the pulley wheels for the belts. Is this the sound of a cracked bearing within a pulley? Also, the steering seems like that of a late 70's GM - very loose.

Need help on this one! Guesses as to parts & labor appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

-Jack
