speedometer not working---electronic/Japan 700

My 91 740 has an electronic speedo. A signal is sent from a device from the differental...There is no cable involved here. The odometer is working fine which suggests to me that there is some signal being sent to the speedo unit.
Does anyone know for sure what is the most likely component failure in the speedo unit (mechanical/electrical )? I was told that for my production year 91
these electronic speedos made in Japan were used in the 740. Whether this is true or not I dont know.
Thanks for any suggestions
