temperature gage 1800 1972

Temp. sensor is located at rear of the top of the head, next to valve cover.

From the factory '71 1800 manual (I'm pretty sure this will apply also to yours)

Using Ohm meter, resistance of gauge (sensor wire disco.) should be "about 58 Ohms". Sensor should be "37.4 - 47.6 ohms at 100 Deg. C".

You didn't mention if any other instruments were doing strange things (in which case, the FIRST thing you would want to check would be the output of that infamous "Voltage Stabiliser").
