can't diagnose noise coming from trans/engine

It's a variable grinding type noise. Probably "taps" about 2-3 times per second. As the engine RPM goes up, the taps increased in repetativeness. It's hard to explain, as I haven't really heard a noise like it before (probably why I can't diagnose it!). When I jacked the front end of the car up to see what it was, just a slight incline made it go away. After driving it a little, it stopped compleatly. The car's going to the yard soon anyway, but just kinda currious and thought I might try to figure it out before I go on a trip.

Thanks,

p.s. The "chop top" project went smoothly. I'll post some pictures of it soon.
