Volvo 960 Periodic Starting Problems

Try moving the shift lever back and forth a few times using the lock override to see if this will clear the problem right away. If it does, a guess is that your PNP switch is on it's way out. It is located on the right side of the transmission next to the exhaust. If it doesn't make contact, the rest of the system will act like the car is in gear and won't let you operate the starter.

The switch is relatively expensive and the "standard labor rate" includes disconnecting the exhaust system but most people claim it can be replaced with the exhaust left in place.

Keep us posted.
