engine knock 84 240dl 200

I just bought the car a few weeks ago, my first brick. 131,000, starts great, idles smooth. When accelerating it sometimes "knocks" a bit - that "rattling bottles" kind of sound. Only seems to do it at initial start of acceleration. I just replaced the plugs, cap and rotor - no change (but it does seem to have a bit more power). It's been a long time since I owned a car like this (one that I think I can actually work on myself!). Is it likely the timing is off? The old plugs were worn, but otherwise looked normal.
Another small annoyance is one of the two vaccum hoses that connect next to the throttle body keeps coming off...where does the other end connect? Somewhere under the air filter it appears. It looks like a bit of a pain to replace.
The knock occurs with the hose in place, so I discounted that. It seems to idle and run no different whether the hose is connected or not.
Thanks for any advice!
