M46 + J type OD slow to engage when hot, simple fix? 700 1985

I did have the very same problem with my P/J OD. I could fix this problem for a long time by cleaning the oil pick-up strainer and the pressure filter with brake disk cleaner. It is not necessary to remove the OD to do so. After draining the oil I removed the valve cover (accessible from underneath the car) together with the oil pick-up strainer. Several plugs are visible then. The pressure filter is behind the large plug. It took me a little while to get it out, because I did not want to damage it. Circlip pliers or so may work, but I made a tool myself (a steel plate with two bolts of the right diameter and distance to each other) to have a very tight fit. In case your filters are dirty, I assume waiting to long before cleaning them will increase the risk of burning the cone clutch. There are very good pictures of the whole procedure in the „Haynes“. If this is your problem, it may be a cheap fix. I hope you get it working again.
Good luck:
Toby
