Recently purchased 265 (1982) blowing smoke and burning oil 200 1982

I'm not very mechanical, apologies all. I recently bought my first Volvo from an enthusiast who is a Volvo dealer. He said he had given it a "top end" engine recondition and that it was mechanically excellent. Problem is that it is burning about 500ml of oil per 300 miles (is this a lot? seems a lot ...) and blowing smoke. It runs very noisily, like it's "choking" all the time. It's done about 150, 000miles. Burns a lot of gas, too. I'm worried that I've bought a major problem. Can anyone advise?
