Overdrive Relay/Solenoid Troubleshooting Logic - True or Incorrect?? 200 1991

My 240 wagon (115K miles)would drop sometimes jump into the overdrive lockout mode own its own. I posted a note a got some advice related to the relay. After finally locating the relay (not where books say) but rather mounted down by the passengers left leg area, I pulled it out to look for solder cracks. None found. I left the relay out thinking that my car by default would operating in all 4 gears. I only get into 3rd. Does this point to the solenoid for sure. My logic is that is that it does not fully close. Before I buy a replacement, I'd like to make sure I'm on the right track. Appreciate any advise from those who have lived thru this. Where is a good place to buy a solenoid and how much should I pay? Can I permanently plug mine somehow? I never pull anything or operate in a hilly area so I don't care above locking out the overdrive. Thanks in advance.
